What is PTCS Certification?

As a PTCS–certified contractor, we here at Hood Canal Heating & Cooling are able to provide our customers with duct testing and installation services in that meet the high standards of the PTCS. This certification program is sponsored by Bonneville Power Administration in order to establish best practices for HVAC systems. When you work with a PTCS–certified technician, you know that the services and equipment that are getting installed in your home are of very high quality. A PTCS–certified technician is trained to properly size both ductwork and heating and air conditioning equipment to your home’s needs.

Why Should I Get Duct Testing Services?

If you are getting new ductwork installation from a PTCS–certified contractor then they will likely perform duct testing on your new ducts after the installation process is finished. This is required by the PTCS to make sure that the ducts are installed properly and that there is as little leakage as possible. This will allow the contractor to meet the obligations of the PTCS and also give you a base line reading for how efficiently your ducts operate immediately after installation.

However, if you have never had your ducts tested, then getting duct testing services is a great way to determine how well they are operating. This can be done in about an hour and can often be done as part of regular maintenance for your air conditioning and heating systems. If you discover that your ducts are leaking, you can take steps to have them repaired, replaced, or sealed which would like increase the efficiency and comfort of your home.

What Is Blower Door Testing?

There are a couple different methods of duct testing services. The blower door test is one of the fastest ways to get a general idea of how well your ducts are performing. With this method, your contractor will pressurize your home twice: once with the duct registers open, and once when they are closed. First, our technicians will attach a large fan with pressure gauges to one of your home’s doors. The fan will fill your home with air to a certain point and that pressure reading is recorded. Next, all of the floor or ceiling registers are sealed and the home is pressurized again. You then subtract the two and you are left with a rough estimate of your home’s duct leakage.
